With all the glitz and glamour of the festive season fast approaching, we paired with the powerhouse; Alexander James Interiors to work on something special for our AW window display.
We sat down with them to find out a little more about styling for dramatic effect, Sunseekers and what’s next for them in 2019.
BF: Firstly, can you tell us about AJI?
AJI: Alexander James is one of the leading interior design houses in the UK and has been recognized as one of the World’s Top 100 Interior Designers by the prestigious Andrew Martin Awards in 2016, 2017 and 2018. We serve private clients, property developers and commercial partners internationally. We believe the world deserves design without boundaries, welcoming everyone but not dictating to anyone. We create dramatic interiors without the amateur dramatics. With one of the largest teams of top interior designers under one roof, we can provide full end-to-end support, more choice for our clients and an individual designer from our eclectic team to suit their taste.
BF: Do AJI have a signature style and/or look?
AJI: At Alexander James we pride ourselves on our ability to be versatile in our design approach, from classic contemporary to eclectic modern, there is no style that we cannot achieve for our clients. Our large team of designers allows us to serve a wide range of tastes, meaning that there are no boundaries to our design capabilities.
BF: What were your design inspirations behind the window display concept? Tell us about the pieces & accessories you chose to dress the display with?
AJI: The display tells a story of 1920’s party preparations in ‘her’ luxurious dressing room. Inspired by the elegance of a bygone era, our vignette features the Garbo dressing table from our own furniture collection which has been designed to bring refinement, quality and timeless elegance to any interior. Matching perfectly with Bella Figura’s world renowned lighting collection, it features a stunning blend of rosewood veneers, eglomisé antiqued mirror and grey décor lacquer with details that are evocative of the opulence and glamour of the 1920’s and 30’s.
BF: The display has a retro style of the 1920s era, incorporating your stunning Garbo named dressing table. Tell us more about your furniture range?
AJI: The Alexander James furniture collection has been designed to bring refinement, quality and timeless elegance to any design. Developed by Creative Director, Stacey Sibley, each piece of the collection works together cohesively but can also work as individual statement pieces. Each upholstered piece is hand crafted in a UK workshop that has a heritage in fine furniture making spanning more than half a century. There are 21 pieces in the collection, made using only the finest materials and craft techniques.
“Luxury exists through attention to the finest of details.”
BF: We have re-launched a classic petal chandelier as the ‘Dahlia’ chandelier with Smoke glass in this display. What drew you to this design?
AJI: The curved elegant lines, texture and colour of the glass worked perfectly with the theme of the window. The rich tones of the glass contrasted beautifully with the soft palette of the display, adding drama to the scene.
BF: Choosing lighting pieces from our Retro Murano, Art Deco & new Contour ranges within the display. Do you have a favourite Bella Figura product to use in projects?
AJI: We love the Savile Row Chandelier from the Mayfair Collection. It carries a strong elegance and is extremely versatile for use in both classic and more contemporary projects. We recently used it in the hallway of our Westminster Apartment project, the beauty of the hand carved Lucite tiles setting a tone of opulence for the rest of the apartment.
BF: What has been your most ambitious project to date?
AJI: Among our many ambitious projects, one particularly special project for us was a converted grade II listed Chapel in Mill Hill London. Due to the impressive size of the property, we enjoyed the fabulous challenge of selecting furnishings proportionate to the grand scale of the building, luxurious pieces that were worthy of such a palatial style of architecture. We are proud to have turned such a large building into a luxurious home, perfect for everyday family living.
BF: All of our lighting is designed & made in the UK & Italy. How important is craftsmanship & quality to yourselves & your clients?
AJI: We pride ourselves on our attention to detail, Craftsmanship and Quality is always at the forefront of our designs. This is important to both ourselves and our clients, as we know that luxury exists through attention to the finest of details.
BF: Who or what in the interiors industry is inspiring you right now?
AJI: We are forever inspired by others in our industry, and trends in the wider design environment. Our favourite Furniture, Fabric and Lighting brands always inspire us with their relentless stream of diverse and innovative collections that allow us to be so creative in our designs.
