We invited Ben Huckerby Design, a thriving Yorkshire based design team to London to design an awe inspiring display for our Chelsea Showroom. This creative collaboration conjured up an adventurous custom lighting design in the form of a 13 light Pendant Cluster surrounded by carefully curated fabrics, furniture & luxury accessories. Known for his opulent yet comfortable design style, we had the pleasure of finding out more about Ben; his flair for design, faux foliage and future projects.
Bella Figura: In Conversation with Ben Huckerby Design
23 July 2018BF: Firstly, tell us a little about Ben Huckerby Design?
BH: Ben Huckerby Design was founded in 2005, growing from strength to strength in this time. As we have evolved and expanded we now boast a unique purpose built design studio and showroom in Leeds. It often comes as a shock to visitors as we are nestled on a rather unassuming industrial estate. When clients enter they are transported into what feels and looks like a luxurious home, showing the transformation we can create in any space. We collaborate with the most prestigious partners in the business, from furniture to accessories; enabling us to offer the full design experience in the North East.
BF: Who or what first sparked your interest in Interior Design?
BH: From a young age I have always had a flair for design and an impeccable eye for detail. I always found it quite frustrating when people choose not do things thoroughly or to the best of their ability. My creative passion coupled with an intrinsic awareness for spatial planning meant it felt natural for me to pursue a career in Interior Architecture. I thrive helping others create their dream, a perfect hybrid of stylish yet comfortable living spaces.
"We are a big fan of your Diamond lamps - they are not just a light source, but beautiful art sculptures in their own right."
BF: Please tell us about the fabrics & accessories chosen for the window display?
BH: From the off set, we wanted to create a bold impact with your display, injecting colour & texture with the fabrics chosen. We opted for rich, plush velvets in luxurious tones. The jewel-like claret velvet provides the perfect backdrop for the pendants to dance and gleam in front of. We also considered the time of year, incorporating greenery in the scheme using artificial flowers to echo Spring/Summertime.
BF: We adore the floral arrangements incorporated into the display. Do you prefer to use faux to real flowers in your work?
BH: The floral posies draw your eye around the window; from the height of the ceiling plate to the beautiful bespoke rug. Where possible we endeavour to use real flowers in our schemes, especially prior to the handover process. Artificial flowers add a pop of colour, bringing vitality to interior spaces and providing that special finishing touch. The faux foliage we use are so convincingly realistic, we have even learnt of clients watering them!
BF: You have our largest size Pentagon chandelier uniquely flush mounted in your Leeds showroom. What are you favourite (s) BF product to date & why so?
BH: We adore the large Pentagon chandelier in our Showroom. We didn’t let the height of the ceiling in our formal lounge area restrict us, choosing a custom flush mounted plate over the standard chain you offer - ensuring the end result had the desired wow factor. We are a big fan of your Diamond lamps which we have a few of nestled within our showroom - they are not just a light source, but beautiful art sculptures in their own right.
BF: All of our lighting is designed & made in the UK & Italy. How important is craftsmanship & quality to yourselves & your clients?
BH: Craftsmanship and quality is extremely important to us and our lovely clients. We really enjoy the fact that these pieces are made to our exact specification and client’s individual preference - allowing us to deliver a unique project with products that cannot be sourced off the peg.
